All, I am current in this craft shooting with a Canon 7D and a small Nikon p/7000 that I call my pocket equalizer (bread and butter shots for everyday), but what I have been wanting is what I define as a purist digital camera. Something like the Nikon F6 is to film.

I prefer the emphasis of product design is focused on the sensor, ISO, WB, enhancing quality and tools within the camera towards still photography. I rarely shoot video and if I do, I have two other cameras that can do that if I want to create a You Tube clip.

I simply want a professional grade purist still FF or possible MF camera that is within reasonable costs. The reason I like Leica is the quality of the optics is legendary.

I like Canon and Nikon but both of these vendors are hell bent on integrating everything that can possible be conceived between video and still. Both seem to be ignoring the fact that when you load all of this "stuff" into the body of a camera, creating a hybrid, the net result is you have less footprint space for STILL photography and tools to enhance your still photography. The last thing we need is another video camera. Sony and Canon have plenty of those... what we need is a solid still FF that is second to none in quality and tools.

When that camera is available, I will buy it. I think pros will buy it.

The question is will Leica answer this or will this request be equally ignored as it has been by both Canon and Nikon.

Hello Everyone,

I am Peter from Ontario Canada. You could say there has been a history of Leica in my family since the late 1940's. I hope this story doesn't bore anyone. My father emigrated in 1951 to Ottawa Canada, with his new wife, after having sold his photographic business in Germany. He wanted a better life for his future children. He was restricted to I believe it was $10,000.00 cash that he could bring into the country at the time, so what he did was to bring his Leica's and a varying assortment of lens's, also I believe some film cameras, all this he would use to setup a new business and also to sell for cash if needed so that they could live.
I was born the following year, and now when I look at the family albums most if not all the pictures that were taken were with one of his Leica's.
What happened a number of years later, a so called friend asked to borrow some of his equipment for a shot, and that was the last we saw of those camera's. There was one left with I believe it was with a 50mm, and a 35mm, lens. To this day I have no clue where they ended up, no one in the family has them, or knows of there where abouts either. Ah well !!
So here I am shortly to retire and I am drawn to my families (Leica) past with the wish to own a Leica, in the hopes of this time passing on to my children some of the history that I remember from my childhood surrounding the photo's that were taken of us with Dads cameras.
I have been for many years shooting film, (Black and White, then colour) and now I am in the digital age with my Nikon's, yet I find something missing. I shoot 95% of my time in full manual mode and manual focus, which seems sometimes strange as there are so many options in the menus these days. But it just doesn't feel right giving that creative control to the camera. maybe that is something that I inherited from my father.
So anyways I am considering a Leica and lens to get back to a more meaningful (for me) way of making my photo's.
I would sincerely appreciate any advise that could help me make my decision in what I shall purchase. My thoughts are at this time the M9-P with a Summicon 50mm F/2 lens to start. (I have read several reviews, and it appears that this is one of, if not the sharpest lens in it class). After that I will see where my new found photography takes me, in regards to possibly adding some other lens's.
I would like to Thank "Leica Forum" for the opportunity to share this moment of my families history.

Most of the Cameras has gone back and forth to solms for a new face lift. But definitely when they come back with a god gurantee and you can rely on their factory check ups and repair. They ready to be on the next action until they get exhaust before they need next care and check up and services. they are work horses. I bought my m8 and it failed the shutter within a week and gone to the factory. came back with a new firmware update etc. I works as brand new now and I am happy. wonderful toy and i paid £1700.00 and still the prize remains the same. Buy it now or never!!!

Help required please.
I am working with Digilux 3 which works perfectly with a standard 14 to 50mm lense.
The battery is fully charged.
The SD card is inserted and operational.
The camera is switched on.
I have attached a leica R to 4/3 adaptor to the Digilux 3
Then fitted an R 35 - 70mm F4
I can manually focus I can work in live view.
However when I press the shutter release nothing happens.
What should I do get it to take pictures?

I corrected my post. I really meant that I found the definition, color and tone of the D-Lux 4 to be better than the D-Lux 5. Your JPEG comparison also shows that. The photos of the D-Lux 4, to me, seems to be more in line with what is to be expected from a Leica Camera / Lens. I also feel the same with black and white photos.

You are correct that I should keep the D-Lux 4 and get the X1. I love the D-Lux 4 and bought my daughter the LX3. I was about to get the X1 but the prices kept on changing - from $1,999 to $2,500+. The black model remains at $1,999 but I think I prefer the grey one.

http://leicarumors.com/2010/11/07/leica-d-lux-4-vs-d-lux-5-iso-comparison.aspx/
http://leicarumors.com/2010/11/14/leica-d-lux-4-vs-d-lux-5-vs-v-lux-2-iso-comparison.aspx/
http://leicarumors.com/2011/01/20/leica-d-lux-4-vs-d-lux-5-jpg-files-comparison-part-4.aspx/

The X1 is a completely different animal - maybe keep the D-Lux 4 and get the X1? I personally did upgrade from DL4 to DL5 mainly because of the video.

Based on my observation of many photographs from both D-Lux 4 and D-Lux 5, I am finding that the definition, color and tone of the D-Lux 4 is much better. Although the ISO performance of the D-Lux 5 is better as tested and the lens has a longer focal length, I much prefer the D-Lux 4. For me, the quality of the photos in terms of definition, tone and saturation are more important. I do have the D-Lux 4 and was considering buying either the D-Lux 5 or the X1. What do others think?

Any news on whether Leica will release a titanium version as it did with the D Lux 4?

I believe the D Lux 4 was announced in Sept of 2008 and the titanium version was announced a few months later, in December of 2008. Do you think Leica will do the same with the D Lux 5 and announce a titanium version this December?

From my own experience M3's due to age only, NOT quality, are prone to unusable viewfinders due to prism cement oxidation or separation.
Sherry prefers M5's.

Recently I went to a shop in search for a Panasonic Lumix TZ10, the shop owner told me the camera is not good an the lenses are plastic. I asked him about the 'leica lenses' endorsement; 'Why would leica hurt their name endorsing bad lenses?' and the answer was 'Leica is in financial trouble being run by a bank, this deal bring revenues and that is what they need now'.

I wonder what is your perspective on that. Is Leica risking its reputation by partnering with - as the shop owner said - 'a microwave manufacturer'?

Comments appreciated.

Please repost your original post, easyaquila. I'm interested in reading about your experience and in knowing who the dealer is. I'm sure others are interested too.

My take on it is that if dealers don't like this type of negative publicity, they should not be dishonest with their customers. As much money as we spend for Leica cameras and lenses, the least we deserve is honesty from the dealer and his sales staff.

Don't pee in our camera bags and try to tell us it's raining.

I would cast my vote for a clean used M4P (not an M4) or an M3 with the MP conversion by Sherry Krauter (around $300 for the conversion, IIRC). Either option will not have an in-camera meter, but for most types of photographing, it's not really that big of an inconvenience. Even when shooting on the street, I find that I can take one meter reading and the light remains pretty constant, unless you move in and out of shadows or shaded areas.

If you really want an M with an in camera meter, A good clean M6 (no TTL, please) would be another economical route.

If price is not an issue, go with an MP 0.72 - this is the camera I have and I have never regretted my choice of it over the M7. Or you can get a nice used MP and an M3, M4P or M6 for the cost of a new MP.

Regarding lenses, a 35 f/2 Summicron (and/or a 50mm Summicron) are hard to beat for allaround use. They are reasonably fast at f/2 and are not as costly as the Summiluxes with their f/1.4 speed. There is no shortage of clean used 35 'crons on the used market, either. Buying good clean used Leica gear definitely helps your dollars go farther and what you give up compared to buying new is of little consequence, if any.

The "sacrifices" made by buying used Leica gear are miniscule. If image quality is your #1 priority, Leica M lenses blow away anything made by Nikon, Canon, Sony, Minolta, Pentax, Tamron, Tokina or any other of the 35mm SLR lens makers. Only the Zeiss 35mm lenses approach the quality of Leica M lenses.
